Unpacking the Social Determinants of Mental Health: Stigma, Interventions, and Outcomes
Main Article Content
Abstract
The social determinants of mental health (SDoMH) encompass a range of social, economic, and environmental factors that significantly influence mental health outcomes. This thematic analysis explores how socioeconomic status, stigma, social support, and policy interventions impact mental health, drawing on recent studies to provide a comprehensive overview. Socioeconomic status emerged as a critical determinant, with lower SES linked to higher stress levels, reduced access to healthcare, and increased prevalence of mental health disorders. Stigma, particularly among marginalized groups, exacerbates mental health issues through social exclusion and internalized discrimination. Social support networks act as protective factors, mitigating stress and reducing the risk of mental health problems, while social isolation increases vulnerability. Policy interventions that address income inequality, improve education and employment opportunities, and enhance living conditions are essential for promoting mental health equity. Integrated mental health services that combine primary healthcare with mental health care have proven effective in improving access and reducing stigma. The analysis highlights the need for standardizing definitions and methodologies in SDoMH research, expanding studies to low- and middle-income countries, and conducting longitudinal and intervention studies to establish causal relationships and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Addressing these determinants through targeted policies and comprehensive care can significantly enhance mental health outcomes and promote well-being at the population level.
